A more than capacity crowd attended the controversial hearing on zoning for Rappahannock County which was held at the courthouse in Washington Friday. The "courtroom was full with standing room only and more people overflowed down the steps into the hall below.
Gen. Daniel Noce, chairman of the Planning and Zoning Committee, conducted the difficult meeting in an admir able manner, recognizing each one present who desired to be heard. Law provides that a county may appoint a planning Commission, an agency of the Board of Supervisors. The Rappahannock agency is composed of Gen Noce, C. E. Johnson, Jr., L. B. Stuart, J. Newbill Miller, H. S. Barksdale.
Present for the meeting were Mr. George Long Executive Secretary of the League of Virginia C o u n t ie s and Mr. Rich ard Dynes, Division of Industrial Development and Planning.
The general consensus of opinions expressed was that the county needed some regula tions, but those set forth in the proposed zoning ordinance in fringed too deeply on the rights of landowners and residents, and that if adopted would impede progress and development or curtail it entirely rather than help the county to develop in an orderly, safe, secure and healthy manner. Some few deemed the proposed regulations as good.
