Blankets are for warmth! Not many years ago, only a wool blanket provided this most necessary quality. Today, many blankets made entirely or partly of man-made fibers give satisfactory warmth. Warmth depends on the ability of a fabric to act as an insulator. Still air trapped in the cloth protects from cold drafts and keeps body heat from escaping too rapidly for comfort. The kind of fiber, the nap, the. construction, and the way the blanket is cared for all contribute to its warmth—or lack of it! Fibers mainly used for winter blankets are wool rayon,nylon, and theacrylicsorlon and acrilan. By law, manufacturers are required to give the fiber content of blankets on the label. Blankets perform like the major fiber. Low percentages of fibers are often misleading because the amount of fiber if too low to give the desirable qualities. Wool is high in warmth qualities, and easily napped (high nap provides warmth because of dead air space). Wool blankets may be treated for resistance to moth damage and resistance to shrinkage. , , Rayon blankets are usually low in price and they are fluffy and attractive when new. The warmth of rayon blankets decreases, however, due to crushing and loss of nap during use, laundering, and cleaning. Rayon blankets also shrink lengthwise and stretch crosswise.
Acrylics are highly resistant to shrinkage during laundering. They give warmth with less weight. They are resistant to moth damage, and retain their original appearance after proper laundering. Acrylics are moderate to high in price. Nylon fiber is usually used in blends with other fibers to giVe added strength. Price is not always a reliable guide for blanket quality.
