Yields of Grass

and Legume Mixtures

Higher yields of forage may be obtained by mowing than by grazing ladino cloverorchardgrass and alfalfa-or chardgrass mixtures, say two Virginia scientists. H. T. Bryant and R. c. Hammes Jr. report that in a four-year period yields from ladino c 1 over-orchardgrass averaged 4,800 pounds per acre of dry forage when mow ed. When grazed by animals the return was 3,200 pounds per acre. Average yearly alfalfa-orchardgrass yields for five years were 7,700 pounds per acre when mowed, compared to 6,800 pounds per acre when grazed by animals. In 1961 all plots were mowed to estimate residual effects of grazing compared to cutting management. The ladino-or'chardgrass plots which had been grazed yielded about 1.80C pounds less forage per acre than plots that had been mowed*
