Deer Kill Continues
Although the last deer hunting season ended January 5, the killing continues on into spring and the fawning' season as the deadly automobile keeps on taking its toll. Judging by Virginia Game Commission figures for past years some 700 deer will meet violent deaths in this manner during 1965. Not all of these mishaps are avoidable but many result from careless unconcern for the danger these animals pose along the roadside. 1 When traveling in deer coim try, especially at night, the motorist should be expecting deer to feed out along the roadsides. The telltale flash of eyes near the road ahead should be an instant signal to slow down and watch out. Just because the animals are not in the roadway is no reason to assume that they will remain that way while the vehicle passes. They are as likely to run in front of or into the automobile as to retreat to the woods. Deer can do tremendous dam age to vehicles and cause serious injury to occupants, a fact not realized by many motorists. Most auto-deer col lisions cause damage in excess of $100 and vehicles are frequently disabled. The motorist who is unfortunate enough to hit a deer with his car should first dispatch the deer if it is injured but not already dead, and then call a game warden county judge, or justice of the peace.
