The past year was a peak year for Culpeper Memorial Hospital, according to JohnD. Phillips, hospital administrator, at the annual membership meeting Friday night. A total of 1388 patients were admitted, for an average of 67.9 per cent occupancy. Of this number, 964 came from Culpeper, 110 from Orange, 100 from Rappahannock, and 61 from Madison. Mr. Phillips also reported that the hospital’s charity load was increasing at a rapid rate. Actual figures for charity, uncollectible accounts due to indigency and losses sustained through state contracts were the highest to date. The hospital’s loss due to these reasons amounted to $33,057, he said. He credited a $5000 donation for the county and the slight increase in percentage of those who carry some type of hospital insurance for the fair overall economic picture of the hospital.
