Water System Op^
The Town Council of Washington, Va. held its regular meeting Tuesday night and the operation of the town water system was the major item on the agenda. According to a court order by Judge Elliott Marshall, the Town of Washington was ordered to take over operation of the water system effective January 1, 1966. The water system had been in receivership for many years. George H. Davis, Jr., attorney for the town, read the court order and explained the steps for compliance.
The original indebtedness for the Water System 30 years ago was $20,000, with the bonds bearing4% interest, and a $500 bond due every six months. Only one bond has been paid and $19,500 is still outstanding. During this length of time the interest has grown to slightly more than $23,000 which ia more than the original capital investment. About $18,000 of this has been paid out of water revenue during the operation under the Court. Under the terms set by Judge Marshall the Council voted to pay $1950 on princi- - pal and $390 on interest. June 1st another payment of $500 on principal and $350 . on interest will be required. After detailed discussion and a period of questions and answers, the Council voted to have all water meters checked and put in working order. It was stated that 21 meters were completely out of order, and others were working poorly. At a former meeting of the Council, Mrs. Virginia G. Miller, Treasurer and Mrs. Dorothy Davis, Mayor, had agreed to act as agents for the Council in the water system operation. They reported that the Rappahannock National Bank will act as collection agent and water bills may be paid there. Guy Burke will continue in charge of maintenance and general operation. The Council set Fix-Up, Clean-Up, Paint-Up Week for April 11 through 18. This is as usual the week prior to Virginia Garden Week.
