Letter To Editor
Dear Madam; I would like to reply to Mr. Miller on the issue of your printing anonymous letters in the Rappahannock News. I would commend you for allowing people to use pseudonyms in the paper as long as you know who the writer is. Mr. Miller has not considered the situation in our county which makes the practice of ‘hide and write" necessary. He has not acknowledged the existence of a political and economic power structure which makes it impossible to state what you believe on certain issues without serious repercussions on yourself, your family, and your friends. Until this possibility is a thing of the past, letters signed with pseudonyms will still have a place in our society. Since Mr. Miller has pointed out that the anonymous letter may be teaching the children "irresponsibility for their words and actions," I suggest that he do everything in his power as a leading citizen and head of the Board of Supervisors to alleviate the situation that makes pseudonyms necessary.
