Social Security Notes
All local residents approaching their 65th birthday1 are urged to visit their local social security district office approximately 3 months before their 65th birthday, Mrs. 11azel F. Daly, Social Security District Manager in Winchester, announced today. She said that 120,000Americans reach 65 each month. She estimated that many of these live in this area, and “are vitally affected by the medicare enrollment provisions." According to Mrs. Daly, the enrollment period for signing up for doctor bill insurance is a 7-month period spanning 3 months before the month in which age 65 occurs through 3 months after the 65th blrth! day month. ' However, she warned, I persons will have medical ln, surance coverage effective at the earliest possible month (65th birthday month) only if they sign up in one of the 3 months before the month of their birthday. Those signing up in the month of their 65th birthday or in one of the following 3 months will not be protected for 1 to 3 months after they enroll.
Mrs. Daly pointed out an interesting sidelight. Under the law a person is considered to reach 65 on the day before his 65th birthday. Therefore, if a birthday falls on the first day of the month, tliat person reaches 65 on the last day of the previous month for social security eligibility purposes. A person born September 1 would legally be 65 on August 31. His Medicare enrollment period for doctor bill insurance runs from May 1 through November 30. This person would have medical insurance protection for the whole month of \ugust only be enrolling before the end of July. By waiting until September, his doctor bill insurance protection would not begin until November. It is not necessary to retire in order to enroll in the medicare program. However, an application is a necessity. She stated that many persons nearing age 65 are continuing to work and are therefore not getting in touch with their local social securits district
