fully consider someone to represent them. The first week of school has passed and thus my first edition of Panther Tales. I hope that I shall be able to do as good a job of reporting school news as those before me. Attention students! Please remember this is your column too. Richmond.... As schools began to open, Colonel C. W. Woodson, Jr., Superintendent of State Police and Chairman of the Governor’s Highway Safety Committee, asked motorists to be alert at times when children are going to and from schools. Outlining the law requiring stops for halted school buses, Colonel Woodson said that many drivers do not appear to realize that this law applies even though the highway be 4lane and divided. The motorist must stop when approaching from any directionandremain stopped until the bus is again in motion and the road clear of children. Failure to do so ! can bring a charge of reckless ' driving. The plea that a motorist did I not see a bus due to a line of cars halted behind it cannot be accepted, he said. “A line of halted cars means they are stopped for a reason 'and a motorist is not justified in dashing around them." Colonel Woodson also pointed out that municipal, private and military buses used to transport children to school lose the protection of the law if they are not painted yellow; and do not bear signs designated by law (Code 46.1-190! (f)). Last year, he noted, three children were killed and 17 injured in c o n n ec t io n with boarding and leaving school buses.
