Seed for planting wildlife food patches is now available. Each Spring this seed is provided free by the Virginia Game Commission. It is available to anyone who has a suitable location and will make the planting.
The only hard and fast rules on suitable location are, it must be a location where the crop can mature and stand through the winter and it must be free of all livestock from planting until the following Spring. It is desirable that it be near water and natural cover.
The annual mixture consists of soybeans, cow peas, milo, millet, buckwheat, rape and lespedeza. Because of the large variety of seed in the mixture you should get a good stand regardless of soil type.
