lack of weed species. As with any crop the better the seed bed the better the stand.
While many wild birds and animals will use these patches, probably the greatest use is made by quail. Bobwhite has enjoyed
several good years and it showed up this past Fall. He got through the Winter in good shape and was seen, just several weeks ago, still running in coveys of 7 to 10. Right now his and her year is starting anew. In just the last several days they’ve started to call for a mate. Bob’s success has been the result of plenty to eat and a winter reasonably free of snow. Mother Nature is not always so kind, however, and several food patches well placed could be just the insurance quail may need this coming Winter.
To those who have already requested seed and those who have cooperated in this program in the past, I will try to get seed to you • in the next two weeks. Anyone who has not yet requested seed may give me a call, 825-3653, or write, Boston, Va., and I will be glad to set some seed to you and advise you on it’s planting as best I can. Also as in years past the Rappahannock Co. Extension Office will have some on hand if it is more convenient to pick it up there.
