plant 1/8 acres. This may not seem like much, but planted in a long narrow strip along a grown up fence row or stream, one or two bags can make quite beneficial patches. Narrow patches provide “edge” which allows the game to use the patches and still be close to cover.

Rappahannock Extention Agent Rapp Owens advises to work up the ground for these patches right now and let the ground lay fallow until planting time. Planting time is tough to pin down because of the many kinds of seed but based on the beans and peas in particular, Mr. Owens says May 10 is about the earliest date for planting. He also points out that the millet, of which there are two varieties, German and browntop, is late in germinating. June 1 should be about the latest you get the seed in to get the best advantage of the Spring moisture. This is a program which takes a little effort in the Spring but can be very beneficial to almost all wildlife in the Fall afid Winter.
