many of tha trees and utility linaa in tha southern parts of tha Park. It waa tha moat aevere storm recalled and the trees resembled those subjected to heavy artillery fire. Maintenance crews exerted special efforts for many months removing the fallen limbs and repairing facilities.
In June 1969, the Park concessioner, the Virginia Sky-Line Company, Opened a new 16 room motel unit, called Craigin, at Skyland. Located on the rim of the mountain, it provides a fine view of the Shenandoah Valley below. This construction was part of a continuing program aimed at improving the visitor accommodations. The National Park Service launched a new environmental education program in 1969 and at Shenandoah over 1,000 school children took part. Facilities were made available and training provided so that teachers may take their classes into the natural outdoors to leam the principles of conservation. Many more schools are expected to take part next year. As part of the Department of the Interior, the National Park Service is intensely interested in developing an awareness of our natural environment.
