We are replying to your letter of December 10 requesting information about the history of Castleton, Virginia.
Raus McDill Hanson, in his “Virginia Place Names,” McClure Press, Verona, Virginia, 1969, gives us the following information, which he obtained from local residents. - “Castleton: Pop. 40, Near mid-point of southeast boundary of , county. Named for Castle Mbtintain.',,'pc!171 1
“Castleton Mountain,” instead of Castle Mountain, however, is shown on the U. S. Geological Survey Sperryville quadrangle map, scale 1:62,500. We are unable to find any information about the source of the mountain name. The Castleton post office was first established May 7,1878, and the first postmaster was James V. Wright.
