The records of the Post Office Department in the National Archives show that a post office was established at Castleton, Rappahannock County, Virginia, on May 7, 1878, with James W. Wright appointed as its first postmaster.
The records of the Post Office Department in the National Archives do not contain any information about the origin of the names of post offices. The practice has be£n for the patrons to furnish a list of names from which the name of the new post office was chosen by the Post Office Department. These lists and the petitions requesting the establishment of post offices are not among the records of the Post [Office Department in the custody of the National Archives and have probably been destroyed.
