LETTERS to EDITOR
Editor Rappahannock News
I have been asked by patrons of my office at different times as to how Castleton was named and when the Post Office was established here.
I am enclosing two letters which give that general information.
It seems that the mountain name has been changed several times, from : Giant Castle to Castle and then Castleton. Some of the old land records in the Clerk’s Office of Rappahannock County refer to the mountain as Giant Castle and I believe that the old county survey calls for a point on Hazel River near Giant Castle. Later in the years, the records refer to Castle Mountain and in the most recent years it is called Castleton Mountain. Maybe we should go back to the.old historic name Giant Castle. Anyhow, I hope this information will be of interest to the people of Castleton as well as others.
Yours truly,
Ray T. Cannon
