Visitors in Va. Parks
People are packing into Virginia state parks this year more than ever, and the Division of Parks expects a record number of visitors in the remaining month of the summer season.
The 1970 attendance was more than 1.5 million at the beginning of August, topping all previous years, the division reported.
State parks are popular with Virginians of all ages and races, the division said, and they attract many tourists from other states and Canada.
Vacation-time activitiesswimming, horseback riding, and pleasure boating in paddle craft -will come to a close after Labor Day on Sept. 7. Virginia’s ten major parks and three recreational areas are open year-round, however, and visitors use the campgrounds, picnic areas, boat launching ramps for fishing boats, and nature trails around the calendar.
Two state parks which are mainly sightseeing attractions at present will remain in operation several weeks after Labor Day. Chippokes Plantation, on the James River in Surry County, will keep its exhibition buildins and formal garden on view in September, and Natural Tunnel in Southwest Virginia’s Scott County is scheduled to stay open through October.
Vacation cabins in eight parks are completely reserved during August, but vacancies will exist after Labor Day until the cottages close Sept. 29, the division said. Cabins are rented for a week at a time, and on weekends or daily only when reservations have not already been taken. All reservations are made through the division’s Richmond office in the Southern States Building.
In addition to the recreation facilities which close after Labor Day, evening programs and nature walks conducted by seasonal naturalists will come to a close.
