A total of 286 scholarships alued at $166,700 are offered his year to current and former i-H members. These bring the lollar amount of educational rants given during the last lecade to $1.4 million. The figures were compiled by he National 4-H Service Committee, Chicago, which ibtains funds from private ources. Some 45 of 60 donors contribute funds for scholarships vhich range from $300.00 to ' $1,600. Each business firm or 'oundation sponsors a specific >rogram such as safety, or inderwrites scholarships to be lsed in pursuing specific courses jf study such as forestry. Several companies have been supporting 4-H in this manner for about 50 years. Among the pioneers are Montgomery Ward; international Harvester Company; rhe Santa Fe Railway System; Chicago and North Western Railway Company; The Bears-Roebuck Foundation and Kerr Glass Manufacturing [Corporation. In the leam-by-doing 4-H program, scholarships are awarded to national or regional winners who usually are high school juniors or seniors, or college freshmen.
There are 45 such programs which range from achievement to veterinary science.
The scholarships can be used for a regular four-year college course or in vocational schools, short courses, business training, nursing and the like.
Among other scholarship donors of long tenure are The Firestone Tire & Rubber Company; Coats & Clark Inc.; Westinghouse Electric Corporation; Eli Lilly and Company; Simplicity Pattern Co Inc.: Standard Brands Incorporated; At Ks-Chabnea; Carnation Company and Ford Motor Company Fund.
