Oil Supply Situation
Rep. John O. Marsh, Jr., has asked President Nixon to help insure adequate heating oil supplies for Virginia communities whose regular suppliers have warned them oil deliveries for the coming heating season are uncertain.
Marsh told the President in a telegram that he had been receiving pleas for assistance from business establishments and public facilities, “including a hospital,” in his 7th Congressional District, who had been told by their local dealers that the dealers’ allotments from suppliers were being reduced “by more than 70 per cent.”
He stated that the problem appeared to be concentrated in the low-grade oils used in the heating plants of many business establishments and institutions and to fuel some industrial processes. He acknowledged that there were a number of factors entering into national policy on the importation of supplemental supplies of these “residual" oils, but asked the President’s help in “the short-term problems” of users dependent on dealers in small and moderate-sized communities who are now are being placed on “minimal rations” by major distributors. While supplies of higher-grade oils continue to be available, Marsh noted, the plants and institutions complaining to him “will find it mechanically or economically infeasible to convert equipment to other grades of oil in time for the new heating season.”
