The 71-degree temperature oi Thursday morning was an ey< opener, and after our usua country breakfast of sausage hash browns, pancakes, syrup anc eggs, we reached Niagara Fails. II is one of the most popular of the world’s great natural wonders and is visited by over three million people each year.
The Niagara River divides at the Niagara Reservation around Goat Island and plunges over the American Falls and Horseshoe Falls. We boarded an elevator on Goat Island and descended approximately 500 feet through solid rock and walked the Gorge Walkway which ends under Terrapin Point to the very brink of the Horseshoe Falls. We stood within a few feet of the foaming crest and walked through the rainbow-tinted spray. If we just stood still, we were splashed from time to time by the windy sprays. The Maid of the Mist boat (which accommodates 100 passengers) glides through the bluish-green waters to the foot of the thundering Horseshoe Falls, a never-to-be-forgotten view. From the American side, we viewed the Canadian power plants, the Seagram Tower, and last but not least the Sky Ion Tower, Niagara’s highest observation point and probably the most modern international pavilion. We decided we must conserve our reduced supply of energy, so just sat and enjoyed the beautiful flowers, the Falls and vacationers bustling by, while Don went to the observation tower for filming of the sights.
