Outline Escape Plan
In Event of Fire
Five basic points are included in a family escape plan outlined by the American Insurance Association in the event your house catches fire.
1. Draw up a floor plan of your home. Indicate all doors and windows, as well as stairways, porches and porch roofs.
2. Figure out two ways to reach the ground floor from each room, especially from each bedroom. Indiate both in your floor plan.
3. Hold fire drills, occasionally at night, so that each member of your family knows what to do. Impress on everyone that speed is vital in case of fire. Get out as fast as you can.
4. If there are elderly persons or very young ones requiring special care, assign someone to help them get out. In many localities the fire department will provide decals that can be place; in the window to indicate to firemen where there is an invalid.
5. Agree on a meeting place outside the house where all must assemble. Once you are outside the house, count heads and stay out. Let the professionals fight the fire. Don’t rush back for anything. Your life is more valuable than any possession. Then, call the fire department, using a neighbor’s phone or the nearest alarm box.
