70 Traffic Deaths
Traffic deaths in Virginia for the first six months of 1970 numbered a tentative 552 to compare well with the 589 for' the same period of 1969, Colonel H. W. Burgess, Superintendent of State Police, announced today.
Colonel Burgess said he used the word “tentative” since late reports and deaths of those now carried as injured are certain to add several to the 1970 toll. He observed that good reductions in January, May and June more than counterbalanced increased in February, March and April. Monthly tolls for 1970 were January, 84; February, 103; March, 89; April, 86; May, 97, and June, 93. Comparable tolls for 1969 were 98, 86, 75, 83,115 and 132 respectively. The 103 of February, 1970, represented an all time high for the month. As late as April 20, he noted, deaths were 20 above the comparable 1969 score.
“The record setting total of I, 304 deaths last year, an increase of 86 over that of 1968, certainly gave us room for improvement and the opportunity to achieve it,” he said.
Colonel Burgess added that he had every hope this reduction trend would continue and said he felt it indicated both an improvement in driver attitude and acceptance of individual responsibility.
Trout Stocking Delayed
Trout stocking planned for early October will be delayed until the extremely low water conditions around the state are alleviated, reports Game Commission Fish Division Chief Jack Hoffman. The October stocking usually includes 8 or 10 of the state’s better streams followed by a more general stocking in November. “Stream flows are currently at the lowest point this season,” Hoffman said.
