Eye Bank Sets Up
Tissue Clearing Unit
The International Eye Foundation offices in Washington. D. C. will act as a clearing house for human eye tissue needed for sight-restoring corneal-transplant operations in the southeastern region of the United States, it was announced today by L. Paul Byrne, Chairman of the Board of Old Dominion Eye Bank of Richmond.
Agreement to set up such a clearing house was made at the recent regional meeting of the Eye Bank Association ol America, at Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
Under the new system, each ol the seventeen eye banks in the region will report by phone to the clearing house either the availability of fresh eye tissue, suitable for transplant purposes, or its emergency need for such tissue. This will eliminate costly and time-consuming calls to individual eye banks and will supplement the nationwide services of the eye bank network, a large group of dedicated amateur radio operators who
