Many drivers are apparently not aware of the 1970 amendment to the law requiring a stop for a halted school bus. This law (Code 46. 1-190 (f) formerly required a stop for a school bus anywhere on the highways, if it was loading or discharging pupils. The 1970 General Assembly amended this law to do away with the required stop if the driver is meeting the bus and is on the opposite side of a highway divided by a physical barrier, or barriers, or an unpaved area. Stops under other conditions are still required. Drivers who are unaware of this change and who make the stop that was formerly required run the dangerous risk of causing a rear-end collision.
