Lost On Oven Top Mt.
A late afternoon’s hike on a pleasant early autumn day by four Sperryville young ladies ranging from age 16 to 7 ended happily about 11:30 p.m. after a somewhat harrowing interlude. The Misses Mary Lou and Naomi Wayland and Lisa and Johanna Day tarried too long on the slope of Oven Top Mt., otherwise known as The Peak, and darkness overtook them. In the meantime Mrs. Eileen Day had become worried about her daughters and went with her son Stephen to the edge of the mountain trying to locate them. After some time elapsed voice contact was made at a distance. Assuring the girls that help would come, Mrs. Day and her son mustered assistance from neighbors and friends, and the rescue was executed. In addition to the four girls, two dogs were also waiting to be rescued.
Added to things that “go bump in the night” Mrs. Day imagined she heard a “Grrrrr” which enlarged her fears. However, seven year old Johanna assured her mother that “she only cried once”.
Blackbirds and other problem birds destroy about 15 million tons of food in the world each year. That amounts to the equivalent of one third of the United States’ food-grain production last year.
