The sun was just a promise as I unloaded a party of fellow outdoor scribes on the James River the other morning. The dawn air was cool and invigorating, and the water - clear and sparkling - had been cooled by a heavy rain the evening before.
It was a great day for fishing.
A sight that thrilled us just as much was the waterfowl trading up and down the big river. As we launched a pair of boats and loaded them with tackle a flock of ducks, in their familiar V flight formation, headed downstream. And then just moments later a lone duck whistled over our heads winging up the river toward Lynchburg.
