Extra Planting Season Sought
A seed firm in Glen Haven, Wisconsin, flew two tons of the new seed to Hawaii In a chartered jetliner, along with tractors and other farm equipment. It will be used to grow seed corn there during the winter months. The Department of Agriculture has advised some seed producers to take an even longer trip to the southern part of South America, where the seasons are the reverse of those in North America. Seed from crops raised there this winter would be available for planting next year in the United States.
Though corn is a form of grass, it has become as dependent upon men as men are upon it. Corn no longer grows wild, but must be cultivated.
Indians were cultivating it for centuries before Columbus found them eating corn pudding, stewed corn, hulled corn, grits and hominy, and johnnycake in 1492.
And anyone who smoked cornsilk as a youngster should feel at home in Burma. The traditional Burmese cigar, the “whackin’ white cheroot” of Rudyard Kipling’s “Mandalay"', was wrapped in waxy corn husks.

Mrs. E. M. Jones and Miss Segar Jones of Washington were hostesses Saturday at a Luncheon Shower in honor of Miss Kaye Johnston at Hampton Inn. The marriage of Miss Johnston and Andrew Reams of Richmond will take place October 10 at Trinity Episcopal Church, Washington.
