On September 27, two vehicles had a slight collision in front of Baldwin’s Grocery just west of Washington on Route 211. Operators of the vehicles were Charles Randolph Turner of Harrisburg, Pa. in a 60 Chevrolet convertible and Henry Franklin Peterson of Gainesville in a 69 Dodge. Turner was pulling out of the store parking lot when the Peterson car struck him. Damage to Turner was set at $150 and at $400 to the Peterson car. These! two wrecks were also investigated by Trooper Buntin.
Farmers Have Better
Year Than Expected
For Rappahannock County’s farm population, the past year turned out to be a better one, all things considered, than had been expected.
From the standpoint of gross income, most local operators were able to report totals that were equal to or better than those of farmers and ranchers in other parts of the country.
One factor that contributed to it was the run-up on the cost of food at the consumer level. This was particularly evident in the price of meat, which rose considerably. The prices of grain and dairy products went up by a smaller margin.
Contributing to it also was the continued strong demand for farm goods and the increased ability of growers to meet that demand through improved operating efficiency.
