Under the reelected leadership of its president Philip R. Irwin the Rappahannock League for En vironmental Protection held its first permanent organizational meeting Friday, Sept. 10 at Rappahannock County Courthouse in Washington, Va. Formed last December in response to an application by the Potomac Edison of Virginia to the county’s Board of Zoning Appeals to construct a 138 kv transmission line through the length of the county from Riverton to Boston, the League made further plans for opposing the line, in addition to branching out into studying several other environmental problems of the area. Support for wilderness preservation bills, which would put 73,280 out of a total of 193,000 acres of the Shenandoah National Park under ths National Wilderness Preservation System filed last April by Senator Harry S. Byrd and Congressman J. Kenneth Robinson, was urged in the first presentation of the evening made by Arthur Wright of the Wilderness Society and parttime resident of Rappahannock. Mr. Wright explained that if the bills become law outdoor recreation would continue in the preserved area but no roads or commercial developments would be allowed thus assuring that the
