Social Security
Notes
Students 18 to 22 who collect social security are reminded to report their earnings and any changes in school enrollment, attendance, or marital status to their social security offices.
The reminder comes from Mrs. Hazel F. Crumpton, social security district manager in Winchester.
“If a student beneficiary leaves school or starts attending on a part-time basis, he needs to notify social security immediately,” Mrs. Crumpton said. “Either of these changes in his status as a student will stop his monthly benefits if he is 18 or over.” A student’s total yearly earnings from part-time or temporary jobs as well as selfemployment can also affect his benefits, she said.
“Any student who knows his earnings for this year will exceed $1,680 should report this to social security,” Mrs. Crumpton said. “Otherwise, he might receive payments which would have to be made up later.” Social security benefits are reduced by $1 for every $2 earned if the student beneficiary earns aetween $1,680 and $2,880 in a year. Benefits are reduced by $1 for every $1 earned if he earns aver $2,880 a year. “A beneficiary can get full benefits for any month he earns ess than $140, regardless of how much he earns in a year.
