Engineer Corps ot the U S. Army and would create a lake which it says is needed for future development of the Northern Virginia area and would also provide recreational facility for a greater number of people than is now available in the rivers. F. M Baumgardner who is with the Army Engineers spoke in favor of the project as did Dorothy Davis, Mayor of the Town of Washington, who said that the impoundment would improve the underground water supply of Rappahannock County which she said is in serious danger of shortage.
Mr. Dennis pointed out that water quality standards would be more stringently controlled if the dam would provide water for downstream areas making it more difficult and expensive for towns like Sperryville, which are on the Thornton River which flows into the Rappahannock, to set up sewage treatment facilities. The dam would proliferate development in the Manassas and adjacent areas which is already “booming with the kind of progress we do not need,” Mr. Dennis said, “and at the same time would destroy a very unique kind of recreational and scenic area which the two rivers now provide.”
