The Wilderness Society is asking for 91,000 acres which is more than the bills call for, but Mr. Wright urged citizens to write their Congressman asking for early public hearings on the bills. "Wilderness costs no money,” he said, “which is one more reason why we can be for this legislation that is so important to this county which is bordered by the Park.” Pro and con of the Salem Church Dam proposal, which would create a high dam on the Rappahannock and Rapidan Rivers upstream from Fredericksburg, was discussed at the meeting led by Robert Dennis of the Central Atlantic Environmental Service, also parttime resident and landowner in Rappahannock County. Mr. Dennis stated at the outset that he personally was opposed to construction of the dam and then named numerous conservation organizations that had gone on record as not being in favor of the dam. Rappahannock County had not yet joined this opposition and he thought that serious consideration by its citizens should be given as to how the dam would affect the upper reaches of the Rappahannock River which borders the county.
