Big Game Trophy

Contest Coming Up

The Game Commission sponsored Virginia Big Game Trophy Contest will be held Saturday, October 23 in conjunction with the Eastern Regional Contest at the Deer Park Elementary School in Newport News. The Eastern Contest is sponsored by the Peninsula Sportsmen’s Association. The Western Regional Contest sponsored by the Harrisonburg-Rockingham County Izaak Walton League will be held a week prior at the Fair Grounds in Harrisonburg, October 14-16. Entries for the Eastern Contest must be submitted before 4 p.m. on Saturday. Those entering the Western competition will have until noon on October 16 to enter their trophy heads. All measuring is done at the site of the contest and no prior application is necessary. Competitors are required to furnish their big game tag or other proof of legal kill. Regional competition includes classes for deer, bear and turkey, but the state contest is limited to deer and bear only. Contestants must bring the mounted deer head or antlers, bear skull, or turkey wing first to the appropriate regional contest, then to the state competition if it proves eligible. Separate deer classes are set up for 9 pointers and above, 7-8 pointers, 6 pointers and archery kills. Smokey Soya: r
