Clean Laundry a
Problem in Automat
Homemakers who use coinsperated laundry equipment have a problem in keeping their white fabrics white, according to Cornell University research reported by Miss Janice Woodard, Virginia Tech assistant professor in management, housing and family development in the College of Home Economics. In general, the study showed the washing conditions of 243 homemakers who used the coinoperated equipment were less desirable than were those of homemakers who washed at home.
“A condition at the coin operated laundry over which the users had little or no control was the water temperature,” the extension specialist in home management explained.
According to the study, very few of the homemakers using the public laundry got hot water even when they set the washer to deliver it. Declared Miss Woodard, “Hot water is generally defined as water with temperatures of 135 degrees Fahrenheit or above.
“Homemakers might find it wise to check the water temperature with a thermometer,” she suggested.
Of the 243 homemakers contributing to the study, only 14 used detergents in volumes and concentrations as recommended by the manufacturers and other researchers.
“Low sudsing detergents were used by 11 of the 243. Liquid detergents were used by two. The remaining 230 used normalsudsing detergents,” Miss Woodard reported.
“Judging from the results of the study, homemakers should be careful not to load washers beyond their capacities,” Miss Woodard concluded.
