Smith, Campbell
held for murder
ERNEST SMITH AND CHARLES CAMPBELL, both originally of Amissville, have been charged with the murder of John Swann Sutton of Arlington. The slaying took place during the early morning hours of September 22, 1970, in Amissville. Warrants were served Wednesday by State Police Investigator Thomas M. Galloway.
The action was the result of a long and tireless investigation of nearly 17 months by Investigator Galloway and former Sheriff Charles K. Estes.
Sutton, 27, was apparently slain by intruders as they burglarized the Lom-Bar-Dy Lunch Room, while he slept behind a nearby building. Sutton had received permission from Mrs. John Poe to sleep on the property in his sleeping bag after he failed to catch a ride to the highway.
He was discovered by Mrs. Poe the following morning and an autopsy showed that death was the result of massive head wounds, any one of which would have been fatal.
The lunch room, owned and operated by lrva M. Poe, was robbed and vandalized.
A preliminary hearing for Smith and Campbell has been tentatively set for 10 a.m. March 1, in Rappahannock County Court at Washington, Va. Smith and Campbell are presently being held on felony charges in Fairfax County^
