Dr. Maclnnis reports there is belief that the causative agent of EHD is a virus that is spread from deer to deer by biting insects. Another theory is that rodents serve as reservoirs of the virus while insects spread it to the deer.
Experimentally, and probably in nature as well, the disease cannot be transferred by feeding infected materials. The procedure develops a high level of immunity to EHD. That could indicate an oral vaccine could become a fact.
According to Maclnnis, EHD is a late summer and early fall disease. Losses stop with the first killing frost, probably because insect activity slows down.
