Eye donor cards
VIRGINIA CITIZENS who have pledged donation of their eyes, on death, to the Old Dominion Eye Bank for use in sight-restoring corneal transplant operations are asked to carry their eye donor pledge cards with them at all times.
R. Kenneth Hudgins, executive director of the eye bank, said that the ultimate success of this sightrestoring program is entirely dependent upon the eye bank’s being notified immediately in the event of the death of a donor. In such cases, he said, “time is a .critical factor, because the eye tissue must be removed within six hours after death if it is to be effectively used in a corneal transplant operation.”
When an eye donor suffers an accidental death, Hudgins said, police officers and medical personnel characteristically check a wallet or pocketbook for identification. If the donor card is attached to such identification, he added, the police and medical aides recognize that immediate action is necessary.
