He emphasized, “EHDis a deer disease. It does not affect domestic animals.

“EHD is primarily a disease of white tailed deer. It has also been found in mule, deer and pronghorned antelopes. It may have existed in North America for the past 80 years. But, it was first studied in 1955 when R. E. Shope investigated an outbreak in New Jersey. He theorized it was caused by a virus and gave the disease its name.

“Since then, it has been found in North and South Dakota, Wyoming and in the Canadian province of Alberta. Suspected, but unconfirmed, outbreaks have occurred in Tennessee, North Carolina and Virginia,” Maclnnis related.
