Glorious Fourth
MUSIC, PICNICKING, fireworks, community participation of all varieties — if that doesn’t add up to the “Old Fashioned Fourth of July” beloved of
political orators (and editorial writers), then we don’t recognize an Independence Day when we see one.
And that’s what’s in store for the Town of Washington, the County of Rappahannock and all who want to join in the festivities this coming Tuesday, July 4th, 1972. And when you remember that all of the doings are focused on a good cause — support of the Rappahannock Library — then the whole business becomes even more worthwhile.
We’d tip a tri-cornered hat, if we had one, to all the enthusiastic volunteers who have put so much thought and effort into what could become a gala annual tradition for “Little Washington” and Rappahannock. These stalwart citizens are due a vote of thanks from all of us for a job well done.
But the best way we can show our appreciation is by showing up Tuesday to join in the fun.
ONE FINAL THOUGHT, one that might even contain the means for one final act of civic improvement:
If anyone spots a handsome wail clock among the Flea Market offerings, we’d wish they would consider the sad state of the time-keeping equipment in Rappahannock Court House’s otherwise exceedingly handsome and well-appointed court room.
Envision, if you will, a mellow clock of the Seth Thomas ilk, blending in with the venerable and time-proven furnishings of what is one of the most distinctive and dignified court rooms in this part of Virginia — or anywhere, for that matter.
Such a judicious purchase (the modifier seems especially appropriate) and donation would provide a final crown for what shapes up as one of the most Glorious Fourths we’ve had around here in a long time. □
