The 4th of July holiday ends very differently than it begins for many children and their distraught parents. Fireworks, all of which are dangerous, can turn Independence Day into “Dependence Day” from loss of sight.

The Virginia Society for the Prevention of Blindness, Inc., offers the frightening figures on fatalities, eye and burn injuries that result yearly from fireworks accidents. One such case was a 13-yearold Richmond area boy playing with a firecracker. It exploded, sending its contents into his left eye.
