MAXIMUM HjJPEED limits will be raised shortly' to 70 mph for cars and 60 mph for traces on most of Virginia’s interstate high- i way system, but will Remain at present levels for 12 urban sections because of safety considerations.
J.P. Mills Jr., traffic and safety engineer for the State Department of Highways, said that the depart- . ment’s sign crews will ber gin erecting new speed limit signs July 1 and hope to have the job completed the next day.
Nearly 400 signs informing motorists of the present limits of 65 mph for care and 55 mph for trucks will be changed, Mills said.
The 1972 session of the General Assembly authorised the increased limits, but provided for lower speeds at specific locations if traffic engineering studies indicated the lower limits were desirable for safe' ty reasons.
