July 1 will see a drastic lowering of the blood alcohol level of motorists necessary to raise the presumption of guilt in cases of operating when intoxicated, notes Colonel H. W. Burgess, Superintendent of State Police.
Under a law enacted by the 1972 General Assembly, this level will be cut from the present .15 percent of blood alcohol by weight to .1. Colonel Burgess explained that while variables enter the picture, a 160pound person has the equivalent of about 6-1/2 ounces of 100 proof whisky in his system when the .15 level is reached. The comparable amount for the .1 level is four ounces.
