THOMAS WILLIAMS lost several tomato plants the other day before he even realized what was happening. The plants had a severe wilted appearance, just as if some one had severed the roots from the main stalk. A closer inspection revealed hundreds of rosey aphids feeding on the underside of the tomato leaves.
This was the first time I had ever seen tomatoes actually killed by aphids. These sfnall plant sucking insects must be having a population explosion this year.
After I left Thomas William’s I found a few rosey aphids on my own tomatoes. The next morning when I called Randy Aylor at the Coop he reported that he had received several calls concerning the same problem.
For control of aphids in the home vegetable garden, use one tablespoon of 57% MalathiOn in one gallon of water. □
