HEADLIGHTS AND REDUCED speeds are being encouraged this Labor Day weekend in a special promotion to save lives and gasoline. In cooperation with a U. S. Senate resolution to drive slower on high speed roads, the Highway Safety Division of Virginia recommends motorists drive 10 m.p.h. under the legal speed limit when it’s posted at 60 m.p.h. or higher.
“At these high speeds a reduction of just 10 m.p.h. not only helps in saving lives, but will also conserve gasoline,” ?said John T. Hanna, director of the state safety agency. “These are two previous natural resources that we can’t afford to waste.” °
The Senate proposal also requests motorists to drive with headlights on throughout the holiday weekend as a reminder to motorists to drive carefully and slower. Last year 24 people died on Virginia’s highways during Labor Day Weekend. Three fatalities occurred on Labor Day.
With the cooperation of all of us, a new trend could be started. □
