ROBINSON said Dr. Reed told him it might be possible to develop observation points from which the public could view the animals ranging large but fenced areas.
“The General Services Administration takes control when a Federal department or agency relinquishes land and then sorts out requests from other Federal activities for allocation of the land, after which State and local requests may be considered,” Robinson explained.
He said the Zoo request would be in the Federal priority category, but would not necessarily conflict with a bid of the Warren County School Board for a portion of the Beef Cattle Research Station for use as a school site, or that of the Virginia Extension Service for use of conference and dormitory facilities at the Station for 4-H Club programs, both of which proposals he is supporting.
Robinson said that the Agriculture Department was not expected to release the bulk of the Station formally until November, but, at his request, had made a preliminary release of the parcel sought by the School Board, “which now must hope -- as I do -- that its interest is not pre-empted by a Federal agency.” □
