THE NATIONAL Zoo would like to establish an animal breeding operation in Virginia -- either in Warren or Caroline County - - according to a proposal outlined to Rep. J. Kenneth Robinson.
Robinson said the proposal, which he emphasized was in an “early exploratory stage,’’ involves surplus Federal lands at the Beef Cattle Research Station near Front Royal and at Camp A.P. Hill.
“Dr. Theodore H. Reed, the director of the National Zoological Park which is a facility of the Smithsonian Institution, has explained that what he has in mind is a breeding farm for rare and endangered species of animals, and he is particularly interested in possible use of the barns and pastures at the Beef Cattle Research Station, which is being closed down by the Department of Agriculture,” the Seventh District Congressman said.
The Department of Defense is declaring 942 acres of the huge Camp A.P. Hill reservation in Caroline County surplus to its needs, and the Zoo also is interested in that land
