ON AUGUST 20, six Relegates from Shenshawpotoo Lodge 276 Order of the Arrow, including myself, met at Dulles Airport to board a chartered flight to the 0. A. National Conference at Santa Barbara, Ca. The non-stop flight to Los Angeles, crossing three time belts, gave us a long - long day and we spent six hours of this time at Disney Land.
Finally, we left Disney Land by chartered bus for the University of California at Santa Barbara for our conference, arriving there about midnight (3 a.m. our time) and had to wait about two hours for our luggage. Needless to say, Tuesday breakfast time arrived much too soon for us.
The conference officially opened Tuesday evening so the day was spent relaxing and swimming in the Pacific Ocean. On Wednesday and Thursday we attended training conferences and watched an Indian dance in which the dancers were fantastic.
Highlights of the conference, especially since all delegates were teenaged boys, were the guest of honor Miss Teenage America, and E. Urner Goodman, the founder of the Order of the Arrow, who is now about 80, who gave the 4,100 delegates his farewell challenge of “New Horizons of Service,” and also showed them that Scouters always stay young as he followed Miss Teenage America as she was leaving the stage^to claim his kiss and remarked, “That’s an interesting teen-ager.”
We arrived back at Dulles at 10 Friday night, tired and weary but ready to take up the challenge of “New Horizons of Service. ”□
