terian Medical Center in New York. He lived in Manhattan and spent part of his time at his farm, Jessamine Hill, in Rappahannock.' He had been the host of the Today show since October 1971. He was a native of Monroe, La. and spent his youth in Oklahoma. He enlisted in the U. S. Army in 1940.
After his service duty he studied at the University of California and at the University of Oklahoma. During this period he worked in radio stations while acquiring his education.
In the mid-fifties he was head of news at an affiliate of the National Broadcasting Company in Montgomery, Ala. and later joined the Washington staff where one of his first assignments was the school integration in Little Rock, Ark. He was noted for his calm delivery on turbulent subjects.
He covered presidential conventions, space shots, visits of notables as well as everyday news. Some of his most distinguished work was on documentary shows.
He won the 1966 Peabody Award for the coverage of Pope Paul IV’s Vi’s visit to New York in 1967,
