THE GRASS along Vir"ginia’s highways will be mowed less frequently this year to conserve fuel, according to the State Department of Highways.
C. 0. Leigh, the department’s maintenacne engineer, said the agency ordinarily seeks to maintain grass in median, interchange and roadside areas on heavily traveled highways at a height of approximately four to ten inches.
This season, the maximum height will be increased to 15 inches, and mowing will not begin until the grass is about 10 inches high, he said.
On more lightly traveled roads, the department’s standards generally provide for a minimum height of about four inches.and a maximum growth of approximately 18 inches, and mowing is not started until a height of about 10 i inches is reached.
