“IT DOESN’T matter which way we take to get there. Just stay clear of the briars,” Jenny said. “We almost always go merkeling here because we have good luck. We used to live down there.” She pointed to the bottom of the mountain, just near the Hughes River, that separates Rappahannock from Madison.
Jenny and Lloyd pointed to young shoots of poke and clumps of the broad, flat leaves of plantain. “There’s a lot out wild that people could eat if they only knew about it,” Jenny said.
“Ever had poke?” Lloyd wanted to know. “I’ll pick you a mess. Ya’ll can go on; I’ll catch up.”
“Tired?” Jenny asked. “It’s not much further. This is the mountain.”
